Stunning two-panel Korean lacquer wall hanging featuring shimmering abalone (mother-of-pearl) inlay set against a deep red lacquer field with black lacquer frame.
Motifs:
Left panel: flowering plum tree with perched songbirds, distant mountains.
Right panel: orchids and reeds beneath a gilt rising sun, flying butterflies.
Technique: traditional Najeon Chilgi (나전칠기) hand-cut abalone shell inlaid into layered lacquer, then clear-coated for a glass-like finish.
Overall Size (hung together): ~19.7 in (50 cm) tall × 15.6 in (39.5 cm) wide.
Each panel: 19.7 in H × 7.8 in W × 0.6 in D.
Hanger: brass D-ring on rear of right panel (ready to mount).
Era: c. 1970s1980s export piece.
Condition: displays beautifully. Lacquer shows age craquelure and a few edge nicks; back boards have spotting from age (see photos). Inlay intact and highly iridescent.
Ships well-padded to protect the lacquer surface.
