This artwork by Craig Tinder showcases the waning days of Panzer-Abteilung (FkI) 301's Tiger I tanks. It centers on the final withdrawal of the unit's last three tanks under intense Allied pressure during World War II's closing stages. Initially formed in North Africa in 1942, the unit was rebuilt in 1944 following heavy losses. After narrowly evading destruction in the Falaise Pocket during the Battle of Normandy, they regrouped and attempted, albeit unsuccessfully, to counterattack the U.S. Third Army in Lorraine, France, before retreating to Germany. In the war's latter stages, Panzer-Abteilung 301 was bolstered with elements of the 9th Division, equipped with Tiger I tanks. These forces were deployed in pivotal battles like the Ardennes Offensive and the Remagen Bridgehead, in vain attempts to halt the advancing Allies. Despite the Tiger I's fearsome reputation, these late-war efforts could not turn the tide for Germany. By April 1945, the unit was retreating into the Ruhr Pocket, a last bastion of German resistance. The final three Tiger I tanks from Panzer-Abteilung 301 were destroyed on 16 April 1945 in the Ruhr Pocket, effectively signaling the end of the unit's war involvement. This scene captures the poignant moment of a once-mighty force succumbing to overwhelming Allied advances and the crumbling German war effort.
