The sumitsubo holds spiritual significance, thus historically, it was placed in newly constructed shrines or temples as a cherished item. Today, it's presented to master carpenters, who often donate it to shrines. This tool marks wood for cutting, similar to a Western chalk line. Its spacious well was designed to hold silk cotton soaked in ink, which is picked up when the line is drawn through for marking.
