- Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, or Tropical Hibiscus, are a large species of flowering, tropical shrubs native to Asia and the Pacific Rim. The exceptional variety of flower forms and colors available today are the result of global hybridization efforts. These unique varieties are commonly known as Fancy, Exotic, or Hybrid Tropical Hibiscus and are prized for their complex colors and structures. While they require careful and attentive cultivation, they are a rewarding choice.
- Elephant Ear is an old heirloom tropical hibiscus hybrid also known as Kona. It is an early 20th Century example of the species potential. This plant has a sturdy growth habit and resilient roots, and its elegant, well-formed, loose, crested double flowers are of soft, creamy, white with a bare blush of pale pink. It is a cross-over hybrid suitable to be grown in-ground or as a potted plant.
- Care: This plant performs best as a well-tended potted plant. It requires good quality, well-draining, slightly acidic, high-quality potting media, the full-spectrum of bright indirect light daily, but should be protected from the hot, direct afternoon sun. It thrives in warm temperatures between 70*F-90°F with a minimum10°F night/day difference, and high humidity (60%−80%). Maintain consistent moisture in the media, but avoid overwatering.
- Indoor Growing: Exotic Tropical Hibiscus do not adapt easily to indoor growing environments due to their specific needs for light, humidity, and temperature fluctuations. Successful indoor cultivation will require significant modifications to an average growing space.
