Pre-Columbian Nayarit Redware Olla Hand-Coiled Ceramic Vessel ca. 300 BCE–400 CE

This redware olla, hand-built by the ancient Nayarit people of West Mexico, would have been used for storing liquids or grains. The geometric motifs are likely decorative, but possibly referencing ritual or agricultural cycles.

Crafted using the coil-and-scrape method, this vessel would have been low-fired in an open flame, giving it the distinctive reddish-brown slip and weathered surface seen here. The vertical line motifs and zigzag border etched into the shoulder reflect the Nayarit ceramic tradition, known for both abstract and figural pottery found in shaft tombs across the region.

This example is free of modern restoration, with mineral deposits and wear consistent with burial and age. There does seem to be a hairline fracture (see last image… not bad for being over 1,000 years old!) This flaw is also reflected in the price. Overall a fine representation of early Mesoamerican artistry.
