1985 Vintage Boye original Balene double pointed 7 inch knitting needles, size 5 (3.75 mm). Package is slightly opened at top.
Years ago, the best knitting needles and crochet hooks were made from whalebone. This material, found in the jaws of certain whales, was called baleen.
Today, for good reason, the great whales are no longer looked upon as a source of food and materials, but the fine baleen implements are still treasured because of their unique features. The knitting needles were slightly flexible and very quiet to use, and all tools were warm feeling and pleasantly comfortable.
Since baleen, manufacturers have used wood, metal and synthetics in an attempt to duplicate these desirable features, but no one has been able to achieve the comfort of natural whalebone. Not until now!
While the all-natural Balene needles are new, important Boye exclusives such as Perfection Points and proven tapered throats have been included.
